I have watched many anime series in my day, but there aren’t really too many that I can say I absolutely love. I’m a bit picky. I don’t like a lot of the high school dramas…or over sexual anime series with the constant boob and panty shots…or the ones with the cutesy characters with big eyes and annoying girly voices (the list goes on and on). I like anime series with at least a decent plot, can make me laugh, includes a little action and adventure, and is well drawn. Since I like a lot of the anime series that are popular like Naruto and Bleach, I’m going to based this more on the less popular series I like.
Accel World– “The year is 2046. Haruyuki Arita is a young boy who finds himself on the lowest social ring of his school. Ashamed of his miserable life, Haruyuki can only cope by indulging in virtual games. But that all changes when Kuroyukihime, the most popular girl in school, introduces him to a mysterious program called Brain Burst and a virtual reality called the Accel World.”-MyAnimeList.net My thoughts: I like this show because it’s full of action and adventure. The plot has me itching for more while I’m waiting for the next episode each week. I also like that it’s set in a futuristic world where physical devices such as computers and cell phones are obsolete. It has a nice mixture of humor, action, and romance as well.
Arcana Famiglia– “The Arcana Famiglia is a powerful organization that keeps the peace on the trading island of Regalo. The most unique trait of this prestigious “family” is their mastery of the Arcana—mystical powers derived from tarot cards. The current leader of the Arcana Famiglia, Mondo, wishes to choose a successor through a tournament called the Arcana Duello, and as added incentive, the winner will take the hand of Mondo’s daughter, Felicita. However, two young men among the family—impetuous Liberta and serious-minded Nova—are more interested in protecting Felicita’s freedom than letting her be someone’s trophy wife.” -MyAnimeList.net My thoughts: Yay, a group of people with special powers! Oh, their powers have to do with tarot cards too? I’m sold! Even though The Arcana Famiglia are pretty much the police officers of Regalo, the series focuses more on what’s going on internally in the organization. It’s one of those series that you can’t stop watching because you want to learn the secrets that are slowly being revealed.
Deadman Wonderland- “Ganta is the only survivor after a mysterious man in red slaughters a classroom full of teenagers. He’s framed for the carnage, sentenced to die, and locked away in the most twisted prison ever built: Deadman Wonderland. And then it gets worse. At Deadman Wonderland, convicts are forced into brutal deathmatches for the amusement of the masses, the cheers of the crowd drowning out the screams of the dismembered. Even when Ganta befriends Shiro, an unusual female inmate, his dark fate crushes all hope —until he discovers the strange ability to wield his spilled blood as a weapon. Ganta learns his new skill might be related to the murderous man in red and uncovers disturbing secrets that could expose those who stole his freedom. He’s determined to see justice served —but first he’ll have to fight for his life in a prison that holds a million ways to die.”-MyAnimeList.netMy thoughts: Blood, Blood, and more blood. Those are my first thoughts when trying to describe this anime. If you are squeamish at all, this probably isn’t the anime for you. I have to say…this series is pretty effed up and sick, but I couldn’t stop watching it. The amount of violence was just so unbelievable and unexpected at times that it kept me glued to the computer screen.
Ao No Exorcist- “This world consists of two dimensions joined as one, like a mirror. The first is the world in which the humans live, Assiah. The other is the world of demons, Gehenna. Ordinarily, travel between the two, and indeed any kind of contact between the two, is impossible. However the demons can pass over into this world by possessing anything that exist within it. Satan, the god of demons, doesn’t have a substance in the human world that is powerful enough to contain him!! For that purpose he created Rin, his son from a human woman, but will his son agree to his plans? Or will he become something else…? An exorcist?”-MyAnimeList.netMy thoughts: I’m kind of a sucker for series involving demons and fantasy type themes so, if you share in that, you’ll like this anime!
Kaichou Wa Maid-sama- “Training, studying and even becoming the first female student council president of the once all-boys school, Seika High School, Misaki Ayuzawa has gained a reputation among the male students body as an uptight boy-hating dictator and as a shining hope for the teachers and fellow female students. However, despite her tough-as-nails appearance, she secretly works part-time at a maid cafe in order to support her family. Unfortunately, her hard-earned reputation is threatened when the popular, attractive, and somewhat impassive Usui Takumi takes an interest in her after discovering her in a maid uniform after school.”-MyAnimeList.netMy thoughts: I usually don’t like too many romance anime series, but this one was funny. I love Usui and how he always messes with Misaki. I also like that Misaki wasn’t immediately dazzled by his good looks and the fact that he’s the most popular guy in school. In fact, she initially hated him. It’s still a bit cliche in the anime world I suppose, but I enjoyed it!
Make sure to read the manga too!
